Suy Niệm: Ðức Giêsu được Thánh Thần dẫn vào sa mạc để chịu ma quỷ cám dỗ. Ðã là người có tự do và trách nhiệm, nên phải lựa chọn, và đó chính là những thử thách. Cơn thử thách của Ðức Giêsu nhắm đẩy Ngài đi trái ý Thiên Chúa Cha. Thiên Chúa Cha muốn Ngài thực hiện ơn cứu độ bằng con đường khổ nạn. Cơn cám dỗ lại xúi bẩy Ngài tỏ uy quyền vinh quang của Thiên Chúa. Nhưng tất cả các mưu chước của sa tan đều bị Ðức Giêsu đánh gục. Ðức Giêsu đã khiêm hạ sống thân phận tự hủy để ý Cha được nên trọn.
Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giêsu, Chúa đã khiêm hạ sống trọn kiếp người như chúng con. Chúa cũng muốn trải qua những thử thách để cảm thông và trao kinh nghiệm chiến thắng cho chúng con. Gương của Chúa dạy chúng con: Muốn thắng cám dỗ, chúng con phải cầu nguyện. Muốn thắng cám dỗ, chúng con phải dùng lời Chúa. Muốn thắng cám dỗ, chúng con phải nhờ sức mạnh của Thiên Chúa. Xin Chúa giúp chúng con làm trọn ý Thiên Chúa Cha. Amen.
Chúa Nhật 1 Mùa Chay – Năm A
Bài Ðọc I: St 2, 7-9; 3, 1-7“Nguyên tổ được tạo thành, và phạm tội”.

Thiên Chúa lấy bùn đất nắn thành con người, thổi sinh khí vào lỗ mũi, và con người trở thành một vật sống.
Thiên Chúa lập một vườn tại Eđen về phía đông và đặt vào đó con người mà Ngài đã dựng nên. Thiên Chúa cho từ đất mọc lên mọi thứ cây trông đẹp, ăn ngon, với cây sự sống ở giữa vườn, và cây biết thiện ác.
Rắn là loài xảo quyệt nhất trong mọi dã thú mà Thiên Chúa tạo thành. Nó nói với người nữ rằng: “Có phải Thiên Chúa đã bảo: Các ngươi không được ăn mọi thứ cây trong vườn?” Người nữ nói với con rắn: “Chúng tôi được ăn trái cây trong vườn; nhưng trái cây ở giữa vườn thì Thiên Chúa bảo: “Các ngươi đừng ăn, đừng động tới nó, nếu không sẽ phải chết”. Rắn bảo người nữ: “Không, các ngươi không chết đâu! Nhưng Thiên Chúa biết rằng ngày nào các ngươi ăn trái ấy, mắt các ngươi sẽ mở ra, và các ngươi sẽ biết thiện ác như thần thánh”. Người nữ thấy trái cây đẹp mắt, ngon lành và thèm ăn để nên thông minh. Bà hái trái cây ăn, rồi lại cho chồng, người chồng cũng ăn. Mắt họ liền mở ra và họ nhận biết mình trần truồng, nên kết lá vả che thân. Ðó là lời Chúa.

Bài Ðọc II: Rm 5, 12-19 “Chỗ mà tội lỗi đã đầy tràn, thì ân sủng đã đầy dàn dụa”.
Trích thư Thánh Phaolô Tông đồ gửi tín hữu Rôma.
Anh em thân mến, cũng như do một người mà tội lỗi đã nhập vào thế gian, và do tội lỗi mà có sự chết, và thế là sự chết đã truyền tới mọi người, vì lẽ rằng mọi người đã phạm tội. Trước khi có lề luật, đã có tội ở trần gian. Nhưng nếu không có luật, thì tội không bị kể là tội. Thế mà, từ thời Ađam đến thời Môsê, sự chết đã thống trị cả những người đã không phạm tội bất tuân lệnh Thiên Chúa như Ađam đã phạm. Ađam là hình ảnh Ðấng sẽ tới.
Nhưng sự sa ngã của Ađam không thể nào sánh được với ân huệ của Thiên Chúa. Thật vậy, nếu vì một người duy nhất đã sa ngã, mà muôn người phải chết, thì ân sủng của Thiên Chúa ban nhờ một người duy nhất là Ðức Giêsu Kitô, còn dồi dào hơn biết mấy cho muôn người. Ơn Thiên Chúa ban cũng khác với hậu quả do một người phạm tội đã gây ra. Quả thế, vì một người duy nhất phạm tội, con người đã bị xét xử để phải mang án, còn sau nhiều lần sa ngã, thì lại được Thiên Chúa ban ơn cho trở nên công chính.
Vì nếu bởi tội của một người mà sự chết đã thống trị do một người đó, thì những người lãnh được ân sủng và ơn huệ dồi dào bởi đức công chính, càng được thống trị hơn nữa trong sự sống do một người là Ðức Giêsu Kitô.
Do đó, tội của một người truyền đến mọi người đưa tới án phạt như thế nào, thì đức công chính của một người truyền sang mọi người đưa tới bậc công chính ban sự sống cũng như thế. Vì như bởi tội không vâng lời của một người mà muôn người trở thành những tội nhân thế nào, thì do đức vâng lời của một người mà muôn người trở thành kẻ công chính cũng như thế. Ðó là lời Chúa.

Chúa Giêsu đáp: “Cũng có lời chép rằng: “Ngươi đừng thử thách Chúa là Thiên Chúa ngươi”.
Quỷ lại đưa Người lên núi rất cao, và chỉ cho Người xem thấy mọi nước thế gian và vinh quang của những nước đó, rồi nói với Người rằng: “Tôi sẽ cho ông tất cả những cái đó, nếu ông sấp mình xuống thờ lạy tôi”. Bấy giờ Chúa Giêsu bảo nó rằng: “Hãy lui đi, hỡi Satan! Vì có lời đã chép: “Ngươi phải thờ lạy Chúa là Thiên Chúa ngươi, và chỉ phụng sự một mình Ngài”. Bấy giờ ma quỷ bỏ Người. Và các thiên thần tiến lại, hầu hạ Người. Ðó là lời Chúa.
LỜI NGUYỆN CHUNG II
Chủ tế: Anh Chị em thân mến, Mùa chay mời gọi chúng ta từ bỏ tội lỗi, từ bỏ lối sống cũ, để trở về với Thiên Chúa, vì Chúa không muốn cho người có tội phải chết, nhưng muốn họ ăn năn sám hối để được sống. Với quyết tâm xa lánh tội lỗi, chúng ta cùng tha thiết nguyện xin:
- Hội thánh có sứ mạng dạy bảo mọi người tuân hành thánh ý Chúa để được ơn cứu rỗi. Chúng ta cùng cầu xin Chúa cho các vị Mục tử trong Hội thánh, luôn biết dùng lời giáo huấn và gương sáng để chu toàn sứ mạng Chúa trao.
- Tiền bạc, danh vọng và địa vị dễ làm cho con người đánh mất lương tri và nhân cách của mình. Chúng ta cùng cầu xin Chúa cho mọi người, đặc biệt là giới trẻ/ biết khôn ngoan tránh xa những cám dỗ bất chính, và những cạm bẫy tinh vi trong cuộc sống thường ngày.
- Ngày nay, ở nhiều nơi trên thế giới, nhân phẩm của người phụ nữ vẫn bị coi thường và thậm chí bị đối xử thô bạo ngay trong gia đình. Chúng ta cùng cầu xin Chúa cho những người có trách nhiệm, biết tìm cách giúp người phụ nữ sống đúng nhân phẩm của mình.
- Chúa Giêsu nói: “Người ta sống không chỉ nhờ cơm bánh nhưng nhờ mọi lời miệng Thiên Chúa phán ra”. Chúng ta cùng cầu xin Chúa cho mỗi người chúng ta, biết cố gắng sống theo Lời Chúa dạy trong Tin mừng, để nhờ đó, chúng ta sẽ trở nên những chứng nhân đích thực giữa lòng thế giới hôm nay.
Chủ tế: Lạy chúa, xin cho chúng con thấm nhuần lời Chúa dạy, để chúng con biết chế ngự những đam mê và từ bỏ những thói hư tật xấu, nhờ đó, Mùa chay thánh này sẽ đem lại nhiều ích lợi cho chúng con. Chúng con cầu xin nhờ Đức Giêsu Kitô, Chúa chúng con. Amen.
Gospel Mt 4,1-11
At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert
to be tempted by the devil.
He fasted for forty days and forty nights,
and afterwards he was hungry.
The tempter approached and said to him,
“If you are the Son of God,
command that these stones become loaves of bread.”
He said in reply,
“It is written:
One does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes forth
from the mouth of God.”
Then the devil took him to the holy city,
and made him stand on the parapet of the temple,
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down.

Old Testament Reading: Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7
2:7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, `You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but God said, `You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.
Meditation: Are you ready to follow the Lord Jesus wherever he wishes to lead you? After Jesus’ was baptized by John the Baptist at the River Jordan, he withdrew into the wilderness of Judea – a vast and mostly uninhabitable wilderness full of danger. Danger from scorching heat by day and extreme cold at night, danger from wild animals and scorpions, plus the deprivation of food and the scarcity of water.
Why did Jesus choose such a barren, lonely place for an intense and long period of sustained prayer and fasting? Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell us in their Gospel accounts that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness. Mark states it most emphatically: “The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness” (Mark 1:12). What compelled Jesus to seek solitude, away from his family and friends, for such a lengthy period? Was it simply a test to prepare him for his mission? Or did Satan want to lure him into a trap? The word tempt in English usually means to entice someone to do what is wrong or forbidden. The scriptural word used here also means test in the sense of proving and purifying someone to see if there are ready for the task at hand. We test flight pilots to see if they are fit to fly under all conditions, including times of adverse turbulence, storms, and poor visibility. In like manner God tests his people to see if they are ready to follow and serve him without reservation or compromise.
Encountering God face to face
On many occasions God tested Abraham to prove his faith and to strengthen his hope in the promises that God made to him. Abraham obeyed willingly even when God asked him to sacrifice his only son Isaac, the son of promise. When the Israelites were sorely tested in Egypt for more than 400 years, they did not forget God. They kept God’s word and remembered his promise to save them. When God called Moses to free the Israelites from captivity in Egypt, God led them into the wilderness to his holy mountain at Sinai. There Moses ascended the mountain and met with God face to face for 40 days in prayer and fasting (Exodus 24:18). The prophet Elijah was also led on a 40 day journey to the holy mountain at Sinai to seek the face of God. God sustained Elijah with bread from heaven (1 Kings 19:8).
Jesus was no exception to this pattern of testing and preparation with prayer and fasting. He was led into the wilderness for 40 days without food or shelter to seek the face of his heavenly Father. When God put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Paradise, he supplied them with everything they needed for abundant life and happiness with him. But when they listened to the voice of evil and followed the counsel of the serpent, who is the devil, they doubted God’s word and disobeyed his command They fell because they trusted in themselves rather than in God (Genesis 2:16-17; 3:1-6). They were cast out of Paradise and driven into the wilderness. Jesus now freely enters the wilderness in order to regain Paradise for the lost children of God. Jesus refuses food to show his dependence on the bread of heaven, the word of God, that would sustain him not only in his physical hunger, but in his hour of temptation as well. When Satan tempts Jesus to turn stones into bread, Jesus replies with the words of Scripture, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (quote from Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4).
Where did Jesus find the strength to survive the desert’s harsh conditions and the tempter’s seduction? He fed on God’s word and found strength in doing his Father’s will. Satan will surely tempt us and he will try his best to get us to choose our will over God’s will. If he can’t make us renounce our faith or sin mortally, he will then try to get us to make choices that will lead us, little by little, away from what God wants for us.
Strength from God in resisting temptation
Jesus was tempted like us and he overcame sin not by his own human effort but by the grace and strength which his Father gave to him. He had to renounce his will for the will of his Father. He succeeded because he wanted to please his Father and he trusted that his Father would give him the strength to overcome the obstacles that stood in the way. Luke says that Jesus was “full of the Holy Spirit” (Luke 4:1). When tempted by the devil Jesus did not try to fight his adversary on his own human strength. He relied on the power which the Spirit gave him. Jesus came to overthrow the evil one who held us captive to sin and fear of death (Hebrews 2:14). His obedience to his Father’s will and his willingness to embrace the cross reversed the curse of Adam’s disobedience. His victory over sin and death won for us not only pardon for our sins but adoption as sons and daughters of God.
How can we overcome sin and gain freedom over our unruly desires and the lies of Satan and the world? The Lord Jesus gives us his Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness (Romans 8:26) and to be our guide and consoler in temptation and testing (1 Corinthians 10:13). The Lord gives grace to the humble who acknowledge their dependence on him (James 4:6) and he helps us to stand against the lies and attacks of our enemy, Satan, who seeks to destroy us (1 Peter 5:8-10; Ephesians 6:10-18). The Lord Jesus is ever ready to pour out his Spirit upon us that we may have the strength and courage we need to resist sin and to reject the lies and deceits of Satan. God wants us to “fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Timothy 6:12) with the power and strength which comes from the Holy Spirit. Do you rely on the Lord for your strength and help?
“Lord Jesus, your word is life and joy for me. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may have the strength and courage to embrace your will in all things and to renounce whatever is contrary to it.”

“The devil said to Jesus: ‘If you are the son of God, command that these stones become bread’ (Luke 4:3). Here we learn that there are three principal weapons that the devil likes to carry in order to wound our souls. They are gluttony, arrogance and ambition. Here begins the weapon with which he has already been victorious. We likewise should begin to be victorious in Christ in the very same area in which we have been defeated in Adam – we should be wary of gluttony. The devious trap is set for us when the table is laid for a royal banquet – it is bound to weaken our defences.
“See what weapons Christ uses to defeat the power of the devil. He does not use the almighty power he has as God – what help would that be to us? In his humanity he summons the help common to all – overlooking bodily hunger and seeking the word of God for nourishment.
“Whoever follows the Word is no longer attached to earthly bread, because he receives the bread of heaven and knows the divine is better than the human, the spiritual is better than the physical.
