Suy Niệm: Họ chỉ còn là một (Thánh Gioan – Phao lô II) “Điều gì Thiên Chúa đã kết hợp, loài người không được phân li”. Câu này chứa đựng đồng thời sự cao cả thiết yếu của hôn nhân lẫn tầm quan trọng của gia đình. Chúng ta cầu mong cho ngày nay mọi đôi lứa đều cảm nhận được sự cao cả và phẩm giá đó; chúng ta cầu mong cho mọi gia đình thấu hiểu được ý nghĩa bí tích và tầm quan trọng luân lý đó. Chúng ta cầu xin điều ấy vì sự thiện hảo của con người! Vì sự thiện hảo của mỗi một người!
Con người không có con đường nào khác để tiến tới nhân loại, nếu không phải là qua gia đình. Và gia đình cần phải được đặt vào ngay chính nền tảng của bất cứ cố gắng nào để cho nhân loại của chúng ta ngày càng trở nên nhân văn hơn.
Không ai có thể thờ ơ với điều đó: Không một xã hội nào, không một dân tộc nào, không một thể chế nào; ngay cả quốc gia, cả Hội Thánh, cả từng cá nhân cũng không. Tình yêu, mối tình nối kết người nam và người nữ, với tư cách là bạn đời hay là cha mẹ, vừa là ân huệ vừa là giới răn… Tình yêu là một ân huệ: “Tình yêu bắt nguồn từ Thiên Chúa. Phàm ai yêu thương thì đã được Thiên Chúa sinh ra, và người ấy biết Thiên Chúa” (1 Ga 4,7). Đồng thời tình yêu cũng là một giới răn, giới răn trọng nhất… “Ngươi phải yêu mến…” (Mt 23,37-39). Tuân giữ giới răn yêu thương có nghĩa là thực hiện tất cả những gì mà gia đình Kitô giáo đòi hỏi.

BÀI ĐỌC I: St 2, 18-24 “Cả hai nên một thân thể”. Trích sách Sáng Thế.
Chúa là Thiên Chúa phán: “Đàn ông ở một mình không tốt. Ta hãy tạo dựng cho nó một nội trợ giống như nó”. Sau khi lấy bùn đất dựng nên mọi thú vật dưới đất và toàn thể chim chóc trên trời, Thiên Chúa dẫn đến trước mặt Ađam để coi ông gọi chúng thế nào, và sinh vật nào Ađam gọi, thì chính đó là tên nó. Ađam liền đặt tên cho mọi súc vật, chim trời và muông thú. Nhưng Ađam không gặp một người nội trợ giống như mình.
Thiên Chúa khiến cho Ađam ngủ say, và khi ông đang ngủ, Người lấy một xương sườn của ông, và đắp thịt lại. Thiên Chúa làm cho chiếc xương sườn đã lấy từ Ađam trở thành người đàn bà, rồi dẫn đến Ađam. Ađam liền nói: “Bây giờ đây xương bởi xương tôi và thịt bởi thịt tôi. Người này sẽ được gọi là người nữ, vì bởi người nam mà ra”. Vì thế, người đàn ông sẽ lìa bỏ cha mẹ mà kết hợp với vợ mình, và cả hai nên một thân thể. Đó là lời Chúa.
ĐÁP CA: Tv 127, 1-2. 3. 4-5. 6 Đáp: Nguyện Chúa chúc phúc cho chúng con hết mọi ngày trong đời sống chúng con! (x. c. 5).
Xướng: 1) Phúc thay những bạn nào tôn sợ Thiên Chúa, bạn nào ăn ở theo đường lối của Người! Công quả tay bạn làm ra bạn được an hưởng, bạn được hạnh phúc và sẽ gặp may. – Đáp.
2) Hiền thê bạn như cây nho đầy hoa trái, trong gia thất nội cung nhà bạn. Con cái bạn như chồi non của khóm ô-liu, ở chung quanh bàn ăn của bạn. – Đáp.

Anh em thân mến, Đấng trong một thời gian bị hạ xuống kém các Thiên Thần, là Đức Giêsu, chúng ta thấy Người được triều thiên vinh quang và danh dự vì cuộc tử nạn của Người, để nhờ ơn Thiên Chúa, Người chịu chết thay cho mọi người. Quả vậy, thật là thích hợp việc Chúa là nguyên nhân và cùng đích mọi vật, đã dẫn đưa nhiều con cái đến vinh quang và đã lấy cuộc khổ nạn mà làm cho Đấng đem lại ơn cứu rỗi được hoàn hảo. Vì chưng, Đấng thánh hoá và những người được thánh hoá, tất cả đều do một nguồn gốc. Vì thế, Người không hổ thẹn gọi họ là anh em. Đó là lời Chúa.

Khi ấy, những người biệt phái đến gần và hỏi thử Chúa Giêsu rằng: “Người ta có được phép ly dị vợ mình chăng?” Người đáp: “Môsê đã truyền cho các ông thế nào?” Họ thưa: “Môsê cho phép làm giấy ly dị và cho ly dị”. Bấy giờ Chúa Giêsu đáp lại: “Chính vì sự cứng lòng của các ông, mà Môsê đã viết ra điều luật đó. Nhưng lúc khởi đầu cuộc sáng tạo, Thiên Chúa đã dựng nên một người nam và một người nữ. Bởi đó người nam sẽ lìa cha mẹ để luyến ái vợ mình, và hai người sẽ nên một huyết nhục. Như thế, họ không còn là hai mà là một huyết nhục. Vậy sự gì Thiên Chúa đã kết hợp, loài người không được phân rẽ”.
Về đến nhà, các môn đệ lại hỏi Người về điểm đó. Và Người bảo các ông: “Ai bỏ vợ mình và lấy vợ khác, thì phạm tội ngoại tình đối với người vợ trước. Và người nữ bỏ chồng và lấy chồng khác, thì cũng phạm tội ngoại tình”.
Bấy giờ người ta đưa những trẻ nhỏ đến cùng Chúa Giêsu để Người đặt tay trên chúng, nhưng các môn đệ khiển trách họ. Thấy vậy, Chúa Giêsu bất bình và bảo các ông rằng: “Hãy để các trẻ nhỏ đến cùng Thầy, đừng ngăn cản chúng, vì nước Thiên Chúa là của những người giống như chúng. Thầy bảo thật các con: Ai không đón nhận nước Thiên Chúa như trẻ nhỏ, sẽ không được vào nước đó”. Rồi Người ôm chúng, đặt tay ban phép lành cho chúng. Đó là lời Chúa.

Gospel Mk 10,2-16
The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,
“Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?”
They were testing him.
He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?”
They replied,
“Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce
and dismiss her.”
But Jesus told them,
“Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment.
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate.”
In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.
He said to them,
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery.”
And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,
“Let the children come to me;
do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to
such as these.
Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it.”
Then he embraced them and blessed them,
placing his hands on them.

Daily Reading & Meditation
2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, `God made them male and female.’ 7 `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.” 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
13 And they were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.
Meditation:What is God’s intention for our state in life, whether married or single? Jesus deals with the issue of divorce by taking his hearers back to the beginning of creation and to God’s plan for the human race. In Genesis 2:23-24 we see God’s intention and ideal that two people who marry should become so indissolubly one that they are one flesh. That ideal is found in the unbreakable union of Adam and Eve. They were created for each other and for no one else. They are the pattern and symbol for all who were to come. Jesus explains that Moses permitted divorce as a concession in view of a lost ideal.
Jesus sets the high ideal of the married state before those who are willing to accept his commands. Jesus, likewise sets the high ideal for those who freely renounce marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:11-12). Both marriage and celibacy are calls from God to live a consecrated life, that is to live as married couples or as singles who belong not to themselves but to God. Our lives are not our own, but they belong to God. He gives the grace and power to those who seek to follow his way of holiness in their state of life. Do you seek the Lord and his grace in your state of life?
Do you seek to help others draw near to the Lord? The parents who brought their children to Jesus wanted Jesus to lay his hands upon them. They knew of the healing power, both physical and spiritual, which came from Jesus’ touch. Jesus, in turn, rebuked his disciples for hindering the children from coming. No doubt the disciples wanted to shield Jesus from the nuisance of noisy children. But Jesus delighted in the children and demonstrated that God’s love has ample room for everyone.
No one is unimportant to God. He comes to each person individually that he might touch them with his healing love and power. May we never hinder our youth from coming to the Lord to receive his blessing and healing power. And as we grow with age, may we never lose that child-like simplicity and humility which draws us into Christ’s loving presence. Do you show kindness to the youth you encounter in your neighborhood, home, and church and do you pray for them that they may grow in the knowledge and wisdom of Jesus Christ?
“Lord Jesus Christ, your call to holiness extends to all in every state of life. Sanctify our lives – as married couples and as singles – that we may live as men and women who are consecrated to you. Make us leaven in a society that disdains life-long marriage fidelity, chastity, and living single for the Lord”.

1 Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways!
2 You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.

5 The LORD bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life!

“Where are we to find language adequately to express the happiness of that marriage which the church cements, the oblation confirms, the benediction signs and seals, the angels celebrate, and the Father holds as approved? For all around the earth young people do not rightly and lawfully wed without their parents’ consent. What kind of yoke is that of two believers who share one hope, one desire, one discipline, one service (Ephesians 4:4)? They enjoy kinship in spirit and in flesh. They are mutual servants with no discrepancy of interests. Truly they are ‘two in one flesh’ (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5; Ephesians 5:31). Where the flesh is one, the spirit is one as well. Together they pray, together bow down, together perform their fasts, mutually teaching, mutually entreating, mutually upholding. In the church of God they hold an equal place (Romans 12:15; 15:6; Galatians 3:28; 1 Corinthians 12:12). They stand equally at the banquet of God, equally in crises, equally facing persecutions, and equally in refreshments. Neither hides anything from the other. Neither neglects the other.
