Suy Niệm: Người biệt phái và ký lục chất vấn Ðức Giêsu vì các môn đệ của Ngài không rửa tay trước khi ăn theo lệ truyền. Ðức Giêsu thẳng thắn vạch rõ cho họ từng vấn đề: Nếu so sánh luật Chúa và lệ truyền của tiền nhân, luật Chúa quan trọng và buộc phải giữ cặn kẽ hơn.
Hơn nữa, trong cách giữ luật Chúa, chỉ giữ theo hình thức chưa phải là đã giữ trọn luật. Giữ luật vì tinh thần luật – cách giữ luật đó mới hoàn chỉnh. Thiên Chúa thấu suốt tận đáy tâm hồn chúng ta. Chỉ Thiên Chúa đánh giá mới chân thật, công bình.
Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa, ở đời chúng con thường đóng kịch với nhau. Chúng con thường tô son đánh phấn khi đến với nhau. Chúng con sống hình thức, giả tạo với nhau và ngay cả với Cha. Cha là chân lý, là sự thật chắc chắn Cha không thể chấp nhận được cách sống của chúng con. Xin Cha sửa lại con người chúng con. Xin giúp chúng con biết sống chân thành với Cha, với chính chúng con và với anh chị em chúng con. Chỉ khi nào chúng con biết sống theo sự thật, chúng con mới xứng đáng là con của Cha. Chúng con cầu xin, nhờ Ðức Giêsu, Chúa chúng con. Amen.

Môsê nói với dân chúng rằng: “Hỡi Israel, giờ đây hãy nghe các lề luật và huấn lệnh mà ta dạy bảo các ngươi phải thực hành, để được sống và được vào chiếm hữu phần đất mà Chúa là Thiên Chúa cha ông các ngươi sẽ ban cho các ngươi. Các ngươi chớ thêm bớt điều gì trong các điều ta đã truyền, nhưng hãy tuân giữ các giới răn của Chúa là Thiên Chúa các ngươi mà ta đã truyền dạy các ngươi. Anh em thân mến, mọi ơn lành và mọi phúc lộc hoàn hảo đều do tự trời, bởi Cha sáng láng ban xuống, nơi Người không có thay đổi và cũng không có bóng dáng sự thay đổi. Người đã muốn sinh ra chúng ta bằng lời chân thật, để chúng ta nên như của đầu mùa trong các tạo vật.
Cho nên anh em hãy khử trừ mọi thứ nhơ bẩn và lòng đầy gian ác, anh em hãy ngoan ngoãn nhận lãnh lời đã gieo trong lòng anh em, lời có sức cứu độ linh hồn anh em. Anh em hãy thực thi lời đã nghe, chứ đừng nghe suông mà lừa dối chính mình.
Lòng đạo đức trong sạch và tinh tuyền đối với Thiên Chúa Cha là: thăm viếng cô nhi quả phụ trong cơn quẫn bách, và giữ mình khỏi mọi ô uế đời này. Ðó là lời Chúa.

Khi ấy, những người biệt phái và mấy luật sĩ từ Giêrusalem tụ tập lại bên Chúa Giêsu, và họ thấy vài môn đệ Người dùng bữa với những bàn tay không tinh sạch, nghĩa là không rửa trước. Vì theo đúng tập tục của tiền nhân, những người biệt phái và mọi người Do-thái không dùng bữa mà không rửa tay trước, và ở nơi công cộng về, họ không dùng bữa mà không tắm rửa trước. Họ còn giữ nhiều tập tục khác nữa, như rửa chén, rửa bình, rửa các đồ đồng. Vậy những người biệt phái và luật sĩ hỏi Người: “Sao môn đệ ông không giữ tập tục của tiền nhân mà lại dùng bữa với những bàn tay không tinh sạch?” Người đáp: “Hỡi bọn giả hình, Isaia thật đã nói tiên tri rất chí lý về các ngươi, như lời chép rằng: ‘Dân này kính Ta ngoài môi miệng, nhưng lòng chúng ở xa Ta. Nó sùng kính Ta cách giả dối, bởi vì nó dạy những giáo lý và những luật lệ loài người’. Vì các ngươi bỏ qua các giới răn Thiên Chúa, để nắm giữ tập tục loài người”.
Và Người lại gọi dân chúng mà bảo rằng: “Hết thảy hãy nghe và hiểu rõ lời Ta. Không có gì từ bên ngoài vào trong con người mà có thể làm cho họ ra ô uế. Chỉ có những gì từ con người xuất ra, chính những cái đó mới làm cho họ ra ô uế. Vì từ bên trong, từ tâm trí người ta xuất phát những tư tưởng xấu: ngoại tình, dâm ô, giết người, trộm cắp, tham lam, độc ác, xảo trá, lăng loàn, ganh tị, vu khống, kiêu căng, ngông cuồng. Gospel Mk 7,1-8.14-15.21-23
When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
–For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,
“Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?”
He responded,
“Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.
You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”
He summoned the crowd again and said to them,
“Hear me, all of you, and understand.
Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;
but the things that come out from within are what defile.
“From within people, from their hearts,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile.”

Daily Reading & Meditation
1 Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders; 4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels of bronze.) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ 8 You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men.”
14 And he called the people to him again, and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside a man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what defile him.”
21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man.“Meditation: Which is more important to God – clean hands or a clean mind and heart? The Scribes and Pharisees were upset with Jesus because he allowed his disciples to break with their ritual traditions by eating with unclean hands. They sent a delegation all the way from Jerusalem to Galilee to bring their accusation in a face-to-face confrontation with Jesus. Jesus dealt with their accusation by going to the heart of the matter – by looking at God’s intention and purpose for the commandments.
Allow God’s word to shape your heart and intentions
Jesus explains that they void God’s command because they allow their hearts and minds to be clouded by their own notions of what is true religion. Jesus accuses them specifically of two things. First of hypocrisy. Like actors, who put on a show, they appear to obey God’s word in their external practices while they inwardly harbor evil desires and intentions.
Allow God’s word to change your way of thinking
Secondly, he accuses them of abandoning God’s word by substituting their own arguments and ingenious interpretations for what God requires. They devised clever arguments based on their own thoughts rather than on God’s word. Jesus refers them to the prophecy of Isaiah (29:31) where the prophet accuses the people of his day for honoring God with their lips while their hearts were far away from choosing and doing what God asked of them.
Uproot wrong thoughts and attitudes before they grow
Where does evil spring from and what’s the solution for eliminating it from our lives? Jesus deals with this issue in response to the religious leaders’ concern with ritual defilement – making oneself unfit to offer acceptable sacrifice and worship to God. The religious leaders were concerned with avoiding ritual defilement, some no doubt out of fear of God, and others out of fear of pleasing other people.
Jesus points his listeners to the source of true defilement – evil desires which come from inside a person’s innermost being. Sin does not happen. It first springs from the innermost recesses of our thoughts and intentions, from the secret desires which only the individual soul can conceive.
Only Jesus can free us from sin and guilt
God in his mercy sent his Son Jesus Christ to free us from our sinful cravings and burden of guilt, and to restore us to wholeness of life and goodness. But to receive his mercy and healing, we must admit our faults and ask for his forgiveness. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9).
Let Jesus be the master of your heart and desires
When Cain was jealous of his brother, Abel, God warned him to guard his heart: “Sin is couching at the door; it’s desire is for you, but you must master it” (Genesis 4:7). Do you allow any sinful desires to enter the door of your heart and mind? We do not need to entertain or give in to sinful desires or thoughts, but instead, through the grace of God, we can choose to put them to death rather than allow them to be the master who controls our way of thinking, feeling, and acting.
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness
Only God can change our hearts and make them clean and whole through the power of the Holy Spirit. Like a physician who probes the wound before treating it, God through his Word and Spirit first brings to light our sinful condition that we may recognize sin for what it is and call upon God’s mercy and pardon. The Lord is ever ready to change and purify our hearts through his Holy Spirit who dwells within us. His power and grace enables us to choose what is good and to reject what is evil. Do you believe in the power of God’s love to change and transform your heart?

“These things are what ‘defiles the person’ when they come out from the heart and, after they have gone out from it, go through the mouth. Thus if they did not occur outside of the heart but were held by the person somewhere around the heart, not being allowed to be spoken through the mouth, they would very quickly disappear and the person would not be defiled any longer. Therefore the source and beginning of every sin is ‘evil reasonings.’ For if these reasonings did not prevail, there would be neither murders nor acts of adultery nor any other of such things.
