Suy Niệm: Các câu hỏi của người kinh sư trong bài Tin Mừng là một vấn đề nan giải của người Do Thái bấy giờ. Họ phân luật thành 612 điều khác nhau: 248 điều phải thi hành và 365 điều cấm. Vì giới luật quá nhiều, nên họ không thể xác định được đâu là điều chính yếu và quan trọng nhất. Ðức Giêsu đã cho họ câu trả lời thật chính đáng và đồng thời chứng tỏ Ngài là Chúa của Lề Luật. Ngài tuyên bố: tất cả các giới luật đều qui về hai điều chính: mến Chúa – yêu người. Hai điều luật này không thể tách rời nhau.
Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa, Lời Chúa hôm nay dạy chúng con quá rõ ràng: muốn được sự sống đời đời phải kính mến Chúa, yêu thương anh em. Ai trong chúng con cũng biết điều ấy, nhưng chưa thực hành hay chỉ làm một cách máy móc hình thức. Xin Chúa giúp chúng con hiểu sâu xa lời dạy của Chúa và đem thi hành một cách cụ thể trong đời sống. Bài Ðọc I: Ðnl 6, 2-6 “Hỡi Israel, hãy nghe đây: Ngươi hãy yêu mến Chúa hết lòng ngươi”.

Ông Môsê nói cùng dân chúng rằng: “Các ngươi hãy kính sợ Chúa là Thiên Chúa các ngươi, hãy tuân giữ mọi huấn lệnh và giới răn của Người mà tôi truyền dạy cho các ngươi, cho con cái cháu chắt các ngươi tuân giữ mọi ngày trong đời sống các ngươi, để các ngươi được sống lâu dài.
“Hỡi Israel, hãy nghe đây mà tuân hành các điều Chúa truyền dạy cho ngươi, thì ngươi được phần phúc và sinh sản ra nhiều hơn, như lời Chúa là Thiên Chúa tổ phụ ngươi đã hứa ban cho ngươi phần đất chảy sữa và mật.
“Hỡi Israel, hãy nghe đây, Chúa là Thiên Chúa chúng ta, là Chúa độc nhất. Hãy yêu mến Chúa là Thiên Chúa ngươi hết lòng, hết linh hồn và hết sức ngươi. Những lời tôi truyền cho ngươi hôm nay, phải ghi tạc vào lòng”. Ðó là lời Chúa.

Bài Ðọc II: Dt 7, 23-28 “Vì lẽ Người tồn tại đời đời, nên Người có một chức tư tế hằng hữu”.
Bài trích thư gởi cho tín hữu Do-thái.
Anh em thân mến, có nhiều người làm tư tế (của Giao Ước cũ), vì lẽ sự chết ngăn trở họ tồn tại lâu bền. Còn Ðức Kitô, vì lẽ Người tồn tại đời đời, nên Người có một chức tư tế hằng hữu. Bởi đó, Người có thể cứu độ cách vĩnh viễn những ai nhờ Người mà đến với Thiên Chúa, vì Người hằng sống để chuyển cầu cho chúng ta.
Phải, vì chúng ta cần một vị Thượng tế thánh thiện, vô tội, tinh tuyền, tách biệt khỏi kẻ tội lỗi và đã được nâng cao trên các tầng trời. Người không cần phải như các tư tế hằng ngày dâng lên của lễ trước là đền tội lỗi mình, sau là đền tội lỗi dân chúng, vì Người làm việc ấy chỉ có một lần khi hiến dâng chính mình. Vì Lề luật thì đặt những người yếu đuối làm tư tế, còn lời thề có sau Lề luật thì đặt Người Con hoàn hảo làm Thượng tế đến muôn đời. Ðó là lời Chúa.
Alleluia: Mt 4, 4b Alleluia, alleluia! – Người ta sống không nguyên bởi bánh, nhưng bởi mọi lời do miệng Thiên Chúa phán ra. – Alleluia.

“Giới răn trọng nhất chính là: Hỡi Israel, hãy nghe đây: Thiên Chúa, Chúa chúng ta, là Chúa duy nhất, và ngươi hãy yêu mến Thiên Chúa ngươi hết lòng, hết linh hồn, hết trí khôn và hết sức ngươi. Luật sĩ thưa Ngài: “Thưa Thầy, đúng lắm! Thầy dạy phải lẽ khi nói Thiên Chúa là Chúa duy nhất và ngoài Người chẳng có Chúa nào khác nữa. Mến Chúa hết lòng, hết trí khôn, hết sức mình, và yêu tha nhân như chính mình thì hơn mọi lễ vật toàn thiêu và mọi lễ vật hy sinh”.
Thấy người ấy tỏ ý kiến khôn ngoan, Chúa Giêsu bảo: “Ông không còn xa Nước Thiên Chúa bao nhiêu”. Và không ai dám hỏi Người thêm điều gì nữa. Ðó là lời Chúa.

Gospel Mk12,28b-34
One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him,
“Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this:
Hear, O Israel!
The Lord our God is Lord alone!
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.”
The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher.
You are right in saying,
‘He is One and there is no other than he.’
And ‘to love him with all your heart,
with all your understanding,
with all your strength,
and to love your neighbor as yourself’
is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding,
he said to him,
“You are not far from the kingdom of God.”
And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The first is, `Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and there is no other but he; 33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any question.
Meditation: What is the purpose of God’s law or commandments? The Pharisees prided themselves in the knowledge of the law and their ritual requirements. They made it a life-time practice to study the 613 precepts of the Old Testament along with the numerous rabbinic commentaries. They tested Jesus to see if he correctly understood the law as they did. Jesus startled them with his profound simplicity and mastery of the law of God and its purpose.
Our love for God is a response to his exceeding grace and kindness towards us
What does God require of us? Simply that we love as he loves! God is love and everything he does flows from his love for us. God loved us first and our love for him is a response to his exceeding grace and kindness towards us. The love of God comes first and the love of neighbor is firmly grounded in the love of God. The more we know of God’s love and truth the more we love what he loves and reject what is hateful and contrary to his will.
Faith and hope strengthen our love for God
What makes our love for God and his commands grow in us? Faith in God and hope in his promises strengthens us in the love of God. They are essential for a good relationship with God, for being united with him. The more we know of God the more we love him and the more we love him the greater we believe and hope in his promises. The Lord, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, gives us a new freedom to love as he loves. Do you allow anything to keep you from the love of God and the joy of serving others with a generous heart? Paul the Apostle says: hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us (Romans 5:5). Do you know the love which conquers all?
“We love you, O our God; and we desire to love you more and more. Grant to us that we may love you as much as we desire, and as much as we ought. O dearest friend, who has so loved and saved us, the thought of whom is so sweet and always growing sweeter, come with Christ and dwell in our hearts; that you keep a watch over our lips, our steps, our deeds, and we shall not need to be anxious either for our souls or our bodies. Give us love, sweetest of all gifts, which knows no enemy. Give us in our hearts pure love, born of your love to us, that we may love others as you love us. O most loving Father of Jesus Christ, from whom flows all love, let our hearts, frozen in sin, cold to you and cold to others, be warmed by this divine fire. In just this way the Lord instructs the writer of the Gospel that he should set before every commandment that love to God which is exercised with all the heart and soul and mind (Mark 12:30; Matthew 22:37; Luke 10:27).
